What is woodworking?

Woodworking is the art of making different objects with wood using wood working tools. Some of them are hand tools like chisels and planes, but there are others, which are powered tools like the electric saw. A wood worker uses these tools to create objects for both decorative and utility purposes. Many of the projects like shelves, bookcases and stools can be done at home saving labour cost and providing the doer with a great satisfaction of having done the job himself. Nothing ever matches this satisfaction and therefore it is a worthwhile venture to invest in 'do - it - yourself' woodworking projects.

The history of woodworking

Wood is one of the most ancient materials with which man worked. Even during the Stone Age, there were many tools, canoes and huts built using wood. Man used the teeth and bones of wild animals to serve as tools with which he worked the wood. Since then man has come a long way and today woodworking is considered both as art and vocation. Wood continues to hold a charm of its own and many people prefer wooden furniture to metal ones. Such is the timeless nature of wood that Robert Frost was moved to say, "The woods are lovely, dark and deep". So how does one create objects of beauty with his hands in today's world?

The internet is a great source for ideas and instruction. However, these ideas lie scattered across many pages and some of them are flawed too. It is not worth the risk to invest heavily into something only to find that the entire effort was in vain.
