Why Most Conventional Treatment Models For PTSD And Phobias Tend to Fail MiserablyThe current state-of-the-art in mental health services for treating anxiety and its many constituent expressions consists of a combination of cognitive behavioral therapy (commonly known as CBT), and mood-altering medications that include such infamous names as Adivan, Buspar, Celexa, Effexor, Inositol, Klonopin, Paxil, Prozac, Wellbutrin, Xanax and Zoloft.
Many of these drugs are in a class of medications known as benodiazepines, which can be both mentally and physically addictive. If you've personally been on any of these medications for any length of time, you know exactly what I'm talking about.
Trying to quit these drugs when you've had enough of them is a nightmare experience for most. Just ask anybody who's tried. To quit these drugs, you must do it very carefully, under the constant supervision of an attending physician, and then only over a period of weeks or months. Breaking free from these drugs comes at a knee-crawl pace. If these meds are stopped too quickly, the physical withdrawal symptoms can, in fact, mimic the very same emotional problems the person had to begin with (anxiety, physical symptoms, etc.) before starting the meds in the first place.
What do you suppose is the purpose of medication in the first place? Well, of course, to help you change your state to help you feel better.
But did you know that its easy to change your state simply by changing how you perceive the things you used to fear? (HINT: That's EXACTLY what we'll be teaching you to do here simply by guiding you through the process of learning to think differently about whatever it is you used to fear.) Despite that, most doctors would rather pump you full of drugs to achieve the desired state if that happens. Yet its not necessary.
And don't get me started on CBT.
The Problem With Standard Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for AnxietyAnxiety is not a consciously (or rationally) created activity, is it? You didn't consciously choose to have your anxiety problem, did you? Of course not! So how can anyone expect that by simply thinking "the right way" about it when faced with the object you fear, you'll suddenly be phobia-free?
Nope. It doesn't work that way. You know it and I know it.
And, of course, therein lies the problem with conventional Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy. You have to THINK about it.
But isn't it true that by the time you're aware of your anxious feelings, it's already too late to "think" your way out of it? — You're already down the sliding board!
Why is that? Why does your anxiety come upon you so quick, without any time to consciously choose an alternative?
It's simple. You see, clinical levels of anxiety are almost totally the result of subconsciously driven processes. That's part of the reason your problem feels like it's so out of control. Trying to control a subconsciously driven problem through conscious means (i.e. talk therapy) is like dealing with apples and oranges. It cant be done.
Worse, when attempts to talk "sense" into you fails, CBT specialists will often recommend the next step in their arsenal — the oft-dreaded Graduated Exposure Therapy. Have any idea what that is?
Yeah. They'll put you in the immediate presence of whatever it is you fear, and you get to sit there and stew in your fear and suffering for as long as it takes you to "habituate" to the feared object or situation.
