    The business concept is simple enough - find shippers and then find trucks. However, when you strike out on your own you risk being perceived as incompetent and unprofessional.

    Knowing the correct procedures for getting set up and working effectively and efficiently with shippers and carriers will mark you as a professional.

    Another thing - you don't need to spend thousands of dollars for training - but you DO need to know the many essential details as well as the basics.

    Why should I be listening to John? What are his qualifications? What are his credentials? Just where is he coming from? These are legitimate questions. Without a face-to-face relationship, there’s a good reason to be skeptical. I’m that way and I expect most people to be the same way.

    So, let me explain why you should be listening to me.

    First, my accounting background in my earlier years enabled me to prepare and conduct numerous workshops to potential small business owners on “How to Start a Business”.

    In one particular consulting venture, I collected financial statements from all types of contractors seeking work. My purpose was to evaluate the financial strength of these applicants to ensure they had the financial resources to relocate part of their operations to Alaska or Canada.

    These were real-life business situations where decisions were made one way or the other. We weren’t playing games.

    Second, after years of marketing research on various ventures and after preparing countless cash flow projections, some people came to recognize me as one of the most "marketing-oriented" accountants in the country.

    A business can have the most powerful financial and accounting systems in place; but, in my opinion, no business will get off the ground unless it has created a solid marketing plan, identifying and catering to a specific target market.

    I could go on and on – but it's difficult to summarize over 25 years of business experience in just a couple of short paragraphs. But you get the picture.

    Eventually, I got into freight brokering because of the benefits it offered.

    Before I got into this brokering, I spoke with about 20 freight brokers here in El Paso. I also spoke with some shippers and truck drivers. The information that was collected was invaluable. It formed the basis for my business...
