From the Desk of Pam Lyon: Dear Prospective Transcriptionist, Recession got you down? Every day someone else I talk to brings up the current economic crisis and how they're scared they or their spouse is going to get laid off next, and then what'll they do? The bills, the mortgage, the child care just won't wait. Times are so uncertain; the days of a company showing loyalty to its employees for their years of dedicated service are long gone. Any yet they ask for so much, don't they? You work overtime (for no pay, 'cause you're on salary), you have to practically beg (or it seems that way) for a measly day off to care for your sick child, and you get two lousy weeks of vacation a year (if that). And then they can just walk up to you one day and say, "Sorry. Layoffs." Boom. You're gone. Time to start over, with all the other thousands competing for the same jobs. Great. Just great. That's a pretty stressful feeling, not being in control of your life. What we need is a way to get that control back, get that job security (when was the last time you heard that?) back. But is there really such a thing as a recession-proof job anymore? Really? When even police and firemen don't have job security? Yep. Can you guess which one? Well, since the big banner at the top of the page says "Medical Transcription," let's talk about that! Hi, I'm Pam Lyon, a 25-year veteran in Medical Transcription, and in one of the last major recessions (oh, a long time ago now) I found myself in this same situation -- uneasy, stressed, curious, and looking for something better than what I had. At the time, I was fortunate enough to "stumble into" the field, not knowing what I'd found, and since then I've never had to worry a day about whether I was going to lose my job when the economy turned sour.
