    The only surefire, long term solution, the best treatment for panic attacks and anxiety for that matter is to look directly in the face of the causes, not just the symptoms. If you are serious about wanting to cure panic attacks and you want to stop them naturally with no drugs then read on.

    If any of us have ever had a panic attack, we would surely want to know that it was possible to stop the assault on our very being. At a time when we are screaming inside for relief and escape from the dungeons of our mind, we would do anything to be free of the torment.

    So tell me, why, in the midst of a devastating panic attack, wouldn’t we insist on yelling STOP at the top of our voices? Fear of the unknown, low self image and self esteem, insecurity, and lack of confidence insist that we stay silent inside as well as outside. Does this help relieve the panic attack? No, actually it exacerbates the attack and increases the impact as we realize our powerlessness in a desperate situation.

    What can we do? – The four step intervention for stopping panic attacks:

    1.    Relax: whichever way we can. For some it might be breathing techniques. Sitting upright, in a peaceful setting, quietly without disturbance… start by taking one deep breathe slowly. Imagine the air traveling into our lungs and further down into our bellies. Breathe in for the count of four, hold our breaths for four and slowly for four counts breathe out. Relaxing might be an easy walk in the park, or listening to some soothing music with earphones blocking out any intruding sounds, while imagining pleasant reassuring scenes in our minds. Humming softly with increasing volume has a calming effect.

    2.    “STOP” negative thinking: With a slight decrease in intensity of the panic attack after using simple relaxing techniques, we are able to start feel better about ourselves. This is the time for reinforcement through the mobilizing of our fragile inner resources and silently inside of us yelling in a voice that could shatter a mountain… “STOP” any negative thoughts!  They do not serve us. They are not our friend. The negative thoughts are not true. I am more than my thoughts. I am beautiful. I am great. Believe it… even just a little. The force of our inner voice has a decided positive impact on our physiology and releases endorphins into our system which helps us to feel better.

    3.    Use coping statements: Coping statements are simple easy to digest comments we write to ourselves. They might be on small cards or a sheet of paper easily accessible at any time. They need to be prepared when we are in a state of even mindedness and relative calm, to be used directly after the “Stop” phase of our intervention. This action drives us further towards our desired calm.

    4.    Accept our feelings: The first task here is to identify our prevailing emotions as soon as possible. They might be fear, sadness, anger, terror, loneliness or a host of other emotions. Then, and this is the important step… DO NOT FIGHT THEM… accept whatever we are feeling as real for us, here and now. We are not wrong or going crazy, this is happening now and what we feel is real, whatever anyone says.

    I hope this helps you on your path to finding a permanent, no holds barred cure for your anxiety and panic attacks. Drugs will dull the pain and give you temporary relief. Break the cycle now and stop panic attacks for good.
