The first chapter starts with a a general introduction to solar power, what is it, how it works and generates life on our Earth. The second chapter however gets right down to business!
How Solar Power Works
Chapter 2 discusses the basis of the solar power cycle, from the rays of the sun to all the way down to electricity, however this chapter is a little short as it does not go into the in depth physics and peculiarities that are there. A side discussion on photosynthesis which is biology's way of processing the sunlight is missed out completely, which will be an even more important aspect of utilising solar power in the future IMHO. Yet, let's focus on the present, and since this guide is more focused on solar cells, let's look at the rest of the chapters.
Building Your Own Solar Generator
Then we jump right into the meat, and Mike shows us how to wire up the basic types of solar power generators:
- portable grid
- intertied grid
- interited with battery backup
- off grid system
These come with nice visuals and pictures, showing you how to connect them, and laymen's description of each element, such as what are batteries and DC converters. Of course the most important element, the solar panels, aka PV panels are also covered which do the major of work of converting the rays of the sun to DC electricity. In a good DIY fashion, Mike again does not go into too much theoretical detail, just enough so you can assemble on your own. If you are not afraid of a little electronics and hooking systems up yourself, then this guide will be for you! You can get all these elements in your home depot.
Going deeper, assemble your own solar cells
This section is even more technical then the first ones, but you dont need to be a jedi electrician as again, this is a step by step, fully documented way of building solar cells on your own. It starts out with ways you can get a hold of cheap and broken solar cells that you can repair at home hence saving lots of money, or later on you are shown how to put one together from plywood, silicone and some more material. Great stuff!
Without revealing the rest of the book, let me tell you that further chapters discuss further ways of going green such as building your own wind power generator in a similar fashion, and the final chapters discuss some upcoming alternative energy sources that you should keep your eye on like ethanol and hydro electricity.
Should you buy it?
Overall, you wont be disappointed I believe. Apart from the first chapter that is very generic biology class on the sun, the rest is all meat and packed with info for the home Do It Yourselfers crowds. Having a solar or wind powered home will not only save you money, but also increase the price of your home as renewable energy systems are trendy these days. Heck, you can even make some money, as utility companies have to purchase any surplusses you produce according to legislation.
