Any school kid can answer the question, "What is a chicken coop?" it is only for some people that this question has a great import. If a person has a backyard or owns a farm, then it is he who would think in detail about all the steps involved in building a chicken coop.
Comfort your chickens
The word "chicken coop" means a sort of shelter or coop in which the chickens are housed for safety from predators and from inclement weather. Some of these coops have a small run attached to it. Those lining on farms do not require runs as they can allow their chicks to roam around in the day and can shut them in for the night.
There are loads of advice on how to handle chickens and how to build them a coop, but it is Bill Keene's ideas and plans, which have a common thread running through all his plans in a very thorough manner. This common thread is the chicken's comfort and he goes on to show how exactly to build a neat, good and cost effective chicken coop with a run for the birds to stretch out a little.
How it all started for him
Bill Keene is a simple person who started raising chicken on their back yard for love of clean organic eggs and naturally fresh chicken. Bill and his wife started out in a small way but as their project grew, so did the positive responses to his ideas. Soon they were sharing it with people and this led to their first boo on how to build a chicken coop to raise chickens in your own backyard. Bill states that people make four very common mistakes when building a coop. He candidly admits to having had help in many of the ideas he puts forth. He presents a collection of good ideas gleaned over time from various people. His book, he admits, is not perfect and is humble enough to leave room open for comment and correction.
About his book
His book is available on the internet for down load after one has paid a fee of about $30 and he claims this is for the book. His book talks about all aspects of building a chicken coop. Some of the topics covered between the covers of the book are how to choose the right spot to build a coop, the right materials to choose, the determination of the proper dimensions for the chicken coop, the provisions for food, water and cleaning. The latter is very important as chickens require clean environment to stay in.

Other topics include lighting and ventilations, treating sicknesses, rearing chicks, collecting eggs, choosing the right hen and cock to put them together for breeding and protection from predatory animals and birds. All this information is available in his book and a person who goes through this book and follows the instructions ends up with a very neat and cost effective chicken coop. The book is a great find because of its respect for recycling and protecting the earth at the same time.
